What can I use the card for? Can it be used for automatic, reoccurring charges?

You can use your ABLE Visa® Card anywhere Visa is accepted, including online bill-pay. Your card can be used for anything; however, if you use the card to pay for something that is not a qualified expense, you’ll have to pay income tax on the earnings portion of the applicable amount withdrawn from your Oregon ABLE account, plus a 10% penalty on such earnings. Also, keep in mind that your non-qualified withdrawals, and housing expenses even if they are qualified expenses, may count against your eligibility for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits or Medicaid if not spent in the same month as the withdrawal from your Oregon ABLE account.

The list of qualified expenses includes, but is not limited to:

  • Recurring charges like living expenses, rent, transportation, etc.

  • Education

  • Employment, training, and support

  • Assistive technology

  • Personal support services

  • Health, prevention, and wellness

  • Financial management

  • Administrative services

  • Legal fees

  • Oversight and monitoring
